What are the most rewarding things about being a counselor?
For me, the most rewarding thing is seeing clients living life, with all of life's richness, the smiles and the tears, and learning and growing regardless of age. A college student with whom I had worked for years when she was younger came back to see me to let me see how well she was doing. Our journeys are all unique, and I find it so rewarding to sit with others and use my own journey to help others on theirs.
What made you become a counselor?
I was in my early 40s in the middle of a "growth opportunity" in my own life and in my key relationships, and I found my own counseling to be so important and beneficial in navigating the complexities of my life! It changed my life, and I wanted to be able to give that gift to others.
What is one thing I recommend for self-care?
I find meditation and time outside in nature to be healing and restorative, helping me to slow down and connect with myself. But everyone is different, and some folks have experienced trauma in some situations, so I explore with clients where and how their bodies feel the most relaxed and at ease and help them incorporate ways to care for themselves in their lives that are the most helpful for them.
What is your favorite animal?
My favorite animal is a horse, of course, lol! As a kid, I was horse crazy and played with horses instead of dolls. I had a pony when I was young, and it was the best gift I've ever received. He was great therapy! He taught me a lot :-))
